Travel Website Review: WhereFor

Travel experience is often great but the planning…

Traveling is a delightful and enlightening experience for most travelers, whether as a family trip or solo backpacking! But, there is no denial of the fact that the part of planning a trip is nothing but a painful process. On numerous occasions, I have given up on trips just because it got highly cumbersome and almost impossible to plan the trip during the days in which I was available or within a budget that I could easily afford. More often than not, I’d end up juggling with over a hundred tabs on my browser, which would eventually crash my computer and put me to sleep and there goes my trip down the drain.

Thankfully, someone chose to rethink the way we plan our travels! The problem is not in the way we plan our trips, but the problem lies in the mismatch between how we think of traveling and how we plan our travels.  WhereFor, a travel based search engine was recently launched at SXSW 2016 at Austin, Texas and it looks like they have a reliable solution for us, travelers!

WhereFor has realized the gaps in travel planning!

WhereFor is a one-stop solution for traveling, right from planning to execution! A lot of travel planning websites like Expedia and Kayak expect us to do our homework before we land on their websites, i.e. we need to know where we are traveling to. But that’s not how we think. A lot of times we really don’t know the options we have to travel to! That’s where WhereFor works differently. Here’s a snippet from the website that explains how it works in four simple steps:

What’s Different About WhereFor?

The one thing that stood out for me is that WhereFor operates in a way that we think. I am quite practical when it comes to traveling and every time I plan a trip the first question I ask from myself is how much money I have for the trip. Then, I explore the traveling options I have by asking friends around and taking a note of their trip expenses. That is how I narrow down my options. However,  this approach is neither reliable nor cost and time efficient, in most scenarios. WhereFor aims to simplify this stage of travel planning.  It allows you to explore the best options to travel to and the cheapest options for flights and hotels that suit your budget,  further you can complete your booking on the same site. An end-t0-end solution!

Analysis of the User Interface of WhereFor

Here’s my analysis of the landing page of I have highlighted different areas of the UI with red boxes and added my interpretations in text boxes. The snippet below is from my Macbook on Safari, however, the mobile website is pretty responsive on android and iOS.

Who’ll benefit from WhereFor?

I will simply quote the CEO of WhereFor, Ryan Wenger :

WhereFor is for the adventurous traveler who wants to explore their options, and the budget-conscious traveler who wants the best deal

Key Takeaways

1. A Dedicated Travel Search Engine:

In about 10 seconds, our software analyzes a quarter million hotels and 5 million flights in over 150 destinations

2. Cheapest Hotel and Flight Options:

We offer the cheapest airfare and hotel prices. If you find a cheaper price within 24 hours of your booking, we’ll credit the difference.

3. Best Cancelation Policy:

For flight reservations, if you cancel by the end of the next business day, we will give you a full refund.

4. Free Trip Financing

For a limited time, qualified customers can book a flight and/or hotel, and spread the total over 12 easy monthly payments, with 0% financing and no fees.

Scope of Improvement

1. How does WhereFor help us learn more about the possible travel destinations? I didn’t find much information about the various travel destinations that showed up as options under my travel criteria. I wasn’t aware of the details of many cities and naturally got drawn towards the more common options like SFO. In future, I would love to see more information on various possible travel destinations.

2. Can WhereFor make suggestions on what we can do with the money that we save? The user experience would get enhanced further if WhereFor gave suggestions for what could be done with the money that we saved, for example, a extra budget meal or an event pass or a walking tour in $15!

3. The hotels reviews are missing: It’s hard to book a hotel without any reviews or feedback from guests. WhereFor did mention that they are working on integrating Trip Advisor reviews into the website pretty soon, that should help!
